In this volume, soil creep is analysed within the framework of other soil-rheological phenomena, such as stress relaxation and long-term resistance, to present an in-depth discussion of the effect of time on soil behaviour. As time is the only state parameter which cannot be entirely modelled in the laboratory, the presented extrapolation is based upon a combination of appropriate theoretical analysis, and the principles of the physical behaviour of soils affected by state parameters such as porosity, water content, stress, strain, time and temperature. Principal macro- and microrheological theories are analysed, and a comprehensive picture of the soil structure and of the effect of state parameters is presented, documented by the author's experiments and illustrated by many examples. The theory of hereditary creep was selected as the best theory serving the author's purpose to propose simple constitutive relations governing creep of soils. The proposed constitutive relations have been implemented into FEM programs and the effect of the time factor has been demonstrated by the solution of such boundary value problems as a dams and underground tunnels. This volume should be of interest to civil engineers, scientists, research and postgraduate students, and advanced undergraduates.

This volume provides a comprehensive overview on the vast amount of literature on solidification heat transfer. Chapter one develops important basic equations and discusses the validity of considering only conductive heat transfer, while ignoring convection, in the large class of materials which make up the porous media. Chapters 2 to 4 deal with problems that can be expressed in plane (Cartesian) coordinates. These problems are further divided into boundary conditions of temperature, prescribed heat flux, and surface convection. Chapter 5 examines some plane geometries involving three-dimensional freezing or thawing. Problems in the cylindrical and spherical coordinate systems are covered in chapters 6 and 7. Chapter 8 is an introduction to solidification in porous media. Many of the applications have been directed to water/ice soil-systems, but it should be clear that the basic techniques and solutions can be applied to such diverse areas as metallurgy, biological systems, latent heat storage, and the preservation of food.

The 53 papers contained in this volume reflect the aims of the International Association for Housing Science which are to improve every phase of housing technology and production particularly through new urban planning, new designs, new materials, new technological and management developments and innovative financing. Emphasis is placed on the application of all these aspects to developing countries although there is much to interest professionals in the developed world.

Revised and expanded, this book provides an up-to-date and comprehensive description of civil engineering contract procedures, and covers the whole spectrum of the legal, contractual and valuation implications of contracts for construction works. This third edition covers relevent English Law up to 1983. The extensive amendments also include a thoroughly revised chapter on overseas contracts, and a comparison of the JCT 80 contract with the ICE contract.
