Il faut travailler sur le schéma corporel, la latéralisation, et la relaxation du geste de l'enfant ; le petit dysgraphique apprend ainsi à gérer son énergie, apprivoiser sa respiration, affiner son toucher, tenir correctement son crayon. C'est alors qu'il parviendra peu à peu à discipliner le mouvement de son écriture, et à s'installer à l'aise dans son espace-feuille, pour découvrir enfin le plaisir d'écrire. La graphothérapie refait le travail pédagogique qui précède normalement l'apprentissage de l'écriture et met à la disposition de l'enfant le « modèle calligraphique », qu'il personnalisera à son gré. En effet, il n'est pas question de pratiquer une rééducation sauvage en imposant à l'enfant une écriture qui ne lui appartient pas.
