About the author

Alan Hargens

Dr. Alan R. Hargens is Distinguished Professor Emeritus at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD). He served as Chief of the Space Physiology Branch and International Space Station Project Scientist at NASA Ames Research Center. He has edited 14 books and published over 400 peer-reviewed articles and more than 60 book chapters. He has trained over 250 students, two of whom became NASA astronauts. His recent awards include the Nello Pace Award for Outstanding Leadership and Contributions to the Field of Gravitational Physiology, the Citation Award from the American College of Sports Medicine for space research and exercise, the NASA Distinguished Public Service Metal (NASA’s highest award), the Nicolas Andry Lifetime Achievement Award from the Association of Bone and Joint Surgeons for development of a pressure catheter and diagnosis of compartment syndromes, the American Society for Gravitational and Space Research Founders Award for pioneering research on Earth and in space, and the Distinguished Scientist Award from the International Society of Adaptive Medicine for distinguished research in humans and animals.
