Seismic Retrofit of Buildings: Portal Frames, Performance-Based Plastic Design, and Detailing Techniques explores the latest advancements and materials revolutionizing structural engineering, focusing on prefabricated, moment-resisting steel portal frames. The book introduces readers to performance-based plastic design, providing a foundation for mastering solutions that enhance building safety during major earthquakes. By emphasizing approaches that combine cost-effectiveness with practical resilience, it equips both students and professionals with essential knowledge to address the challenges posed by seismic events, helping ensure that structures are better prepared to withstand life-threatening ground motions while remaining economically viable.
In addition to technical insights, this reference covers rehabilitation strategies, specialized construction techniques, and considerations for aesthetic and functional detailing. It features construction drawings, real-life project photos, and practice-driven advice, creating a comprehensive resource for both academic and industry audiences. The book also examines the impact of moderate to severe earthquakes, highlighting the risks to buildings and foundations, and the importance of effective retrofitting to minimize damage and facilitate rescue and recovery operations.
