About the authors
Vincenzo Levizzani
Vincenzo Levizzani is a cloud physicist and satellite meteorologist. He has worked for more than 40 years at the Institute of Atmospheric Sciences and Climate of the Italian National Research Council in Bologna and taught for more than 20 years cloud physics at the University of Bologna. He is among the founders of the International Precipitation Working Group of the Coordination Group for Meteorological Satellites and has worked in close contact with EUMETSAT, ESA, NASA, NOAA and JAXA. He has participated to the planning of several satellite missions, including Meteosat and the EUMETSAT Polar System. His scientific interests concentrate on the physics and climatology of clouds and precipitation, extreme events and severe storms. He is author of more than 200 peer-reviewed papers, several authored and edited books for Springer Nature, and a number of popular science books.
Ralph R. Ferraro
Ralph R. Ferraro, formerly theAssociate Director of ESSIC (2021-2036) and former Chief of the NOAA/NESDIS Satellite Climate Studies Branch (2005-2021). Ferraro joined NOAA in 1991 as a Physical Scientist and became one of the original group of five scientists in SCSB in 2003. During his career, Ferraro has been affiliated with several science teams. He has previously led the NOAA National Environmental Satellite Data and Information Service (NESDIS) Precipitation Science Team and was a member of NASA’s Precipitation Measurement Mission (PMM) and Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer (AMSR) science teams. He has also served as the co-chair and the rapporteur of the Coordination Group for Meteorological Satellites (CGMS), International Precipitation Working Group. Ferraro’s current research focuses on the use of environmental satellite remote sensing for both weather and climate studies with an emphasis on precipitation and other hydrological cycle products.
