Presently, the numbers and types of intelligent controllers that contain variations of fuzzy logic, neural network, genetic algorithms or some other forms of knowledge based reasoning technology are dramatically rising. However, considering the stability of the system, when such controllers are included it is difficult to analyse and predict system behaviour under unexpected conditions. Leading researchers and industrial practitioners were able to discuss and evaluate current development and future research directions at the first IFAC International Workshop on safety, reliability and applications on emerging intelligent control technology. This publication contains the papers, covering a wide range of topics, presented at the workshop.
Chapter headings and selected papers: Keynote 1. Safe AI-is this possible? (M.G. Rodd). Genetic Algorithms. Fuzzy control of water pressure using genetic algorithm (K.S. Tang et al.). Real-Time Control. An approach to the design of expert systems for hard real-time control (A.V. Jones, M.G. Rodd). Neural Networks. Stochastic tuning of a spacecraft controller using neural networks (W.A. Wright). Keynote 2. The impact of safety and reliability requirements on the specification of control systems (L. Motus). Keynote 3. The safety implications of emerging software paradigms (G.J. Suski et al.). Fuzzy Systems. Actuator saturation compensation for fuzzy controllers (C.W. Chan et al.). Autonomous Vehicles. Fuzzy logic based behavior fusion strategy for robot navigation in uncertain environments (W. Li). Keynote 4. Advances in neurofuzzy algorithms for real time modelling, control and estimation (C.J. Harris, M. Brown). Keynote 5. Static and dynamic preprocessing methods in neural networks (A.C. Tsoi, A. Back). Fault Detection. Parity vector compensation using non-linear filtering (D. Yan, H.Y.
