BMA Book Awards 2008 - Commended
"What is, for many people, one of the least exciting subjects in pathology, the examination of the placenta, has produced one of the best written texts. There is, in the writing of Professor Fox and his co-author Dr Sebire, a limpidity, concision, and erudition (the term 'succenturiate' is dismissed with a note on the proper meaning of 'succinere') lacking in many other textbooks of histology. There is also much common sense, as the authors consistently resist the temptation, endemic among placental pathologists, of investing every lesion, however trivial, with unwarranted importance. Despite the book's convincing argument that routine weighing of the placenta is 'of little value', the practice, and other such 'genuflexions towards the altar of scientific measurement' continues; this book is an encouragement to all surgical pathologists to consider the true evidence base rather than any arbitrary data set. Pathologists familiar with previous editions will find themselves at home with this latest, which has been carefully updated without any radical, unsettling alterations. For day-to-day reporting of placental histology, this book is the best available and its clarity of style and layout encourage frequent consultation. From the sections on the anatomy and physiology of the placenta, medicolegal aspects of placental pathology and ultrasound findings, one can learn much to make examination of the placenta a more rewarding experience."
Highly Commended at The Royal Society of Medicine & The Society of Authors’ Medical Book Awards
“This is a unique book…a marvellous compendium of fetal pathology and physiology as well as placental pathology…beautifully written, this is a superb book. A real classic and a joy to read.”
