Description

Freshwater Microbiology: Perspectives of Bacterial Dynamics in Freshwater Ecosystems, Second Edition offers an updated and expanded analysis of microbial ecology with a focus on bacterial communities in lakes and other freshwater systems. Building on the foundation of the first edition, this volume integrates new concepts, methodologies, and environmental challenges that have transformed the field over the past decade. Updated and revised, the book examines bacterial community composition, biofilm ecology, and microbial interactions across water–rock, water–sediment, and particle interfaces, while incorporating the latest findings from stratification studies and spatio-temporal monitoring. New chapters include microplastics and particle-associated microbiomes; antimicrobial resistance genes (ARGs) in freshwater environments; integrative omics approaches; bacterial molecules in aquatic systems; the use of environmental DNA (eDNA) and metabarcoding for microbial monitoring. These additions reflect the growing relevance of freshwater microbiology in tackling global issues such as pollution, public health, and climate change. Metagenomic and multi-omics approaches are emphasized throughout, highlighting their role in unraveling microbial diversity, ecosystem functioning, and applied opportunities in biosensing, bioremediation, and industrial applications. The book also broadens its applied microbiology focus, linking microbial research with monitoring tools and policy relevance. By synthesizing classical ecological frameworks with cutting-edge molecular tools, this second edition provides researchers, practitioners, and students with a comprehensive perspective on the dynamics of bacterial communities in freshwater ecosystems and their importance for conservation, water quality management, and sustainable development.
