• Core competencies identified by the CGNA are integrated throughout the book, reinforcing the standards of the Canadian Gerontological Nursing Association. • Assessment guidelines and tools are featured in tables, boxes, and forms, including the latest scales and guidelines for proper health assessment. • Focus on health and wellness highlights all aspects of the aging process. • Healthy Aging Care Plans are based on real-life situations, providing a glimpse into how concepts are applied to care practices. • Evidence-informed Practice boxes summarize research findings and identify those practices with unknown, ineffective, or harmful effects, and examine topics such as culturally safe health initiatives for Indigenous Peoples, lifelong learning and its effects on the wellbeing of older adults, challenges in home care and long-term care homes, and improving outcomes for seniors living with a stroke or dementia. • Activities and discussion questions at the end of every chapter ensure that students understand the material and know how to apply concepts in clinical situations. • Careful attention to age, cultural, and gender differences helps students care for different population groups. • Coverage of the COVID-19 pandemic and the SARS-CoV-2 virus focuses on COVID-19’s impact on nurses and patients, including how policies affect care priorities and long-term care homes as well as the effects of social isolation on older adults. • Enhanced content on cultural competence addresses cultural care, cultural assessment, and cultural safety relating to the unique needs of the older adult. • Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action discussion examines their impact on nursing and health care delivery for Indigenous older adults. • Current and inclusive terminology supports Indigenous Peoples and a commitment to eliminating gender bias and cisnormative language, including Healthy Aging Care Plans that use preferred pronouns as well as initials in place of full names. • 2SLGBTQI+ aging considerations throughout. • Sexual Health and Well-being chapter addresses biological changes that impact intimacy and sexuality in later life, aging and sexual health, how intimacy and sexuality are affected by cohort, culture, and environment (such as long-term care homes), and the unique needs of 2SLGBTQI+ older adults. • Chapter structure provides clarity and solo emphasis on key topics, with separate Cognitive Impairment and Neurological Disorders chapters and with the Mental Health and Wellness in Later Life chapter in chronic illness section.
