Description
Description
Distinguished by its breadth and originality, The Nature of Mass presents a clear analysis of the distinction between inertial and gravitational mass while exploring the origin of rest-mass energy and the intriguing concept of photon inertia. Bringing together ideas from the fields of general relativity, quantum mechanics, particle physics, and cosmology, this text demonstrates how phenomena on the largest cosmic scales can provide insight into the fundamental properties of matter and energy. Integrating conceptual discussion with quantitative analysis, it serves as a valuable resource for advanced undergraduate and postgraduate students, educators, and researchers seeking a deeper understanding of mass, energy, spacetime, and the physical principles that connect them.
Key features
Key features
- Introduces a clear and didactic understanding of essential concepts in general relativity, including Newtonian dynamics, energy, and the essential distinction between inertial and gravitational masses
- Includes numerous illustrations of theoretical concepts, applications, and step-by-step development of the modern meaning of mass, which provide explanations and additional context for physical principles that are often unnecessarily—or even mistakenly—taken for granted
- Aligns with commonly offered upper-level courses in general relativity, particle physics, and related topics in the field, especially cosmology
- Serves as a valuable resource for students and instructors and as solid foundational material with a unified approach for early-stage researchers
