Pamela Lear
Pamela Lear studied pre-clinical medicine at Birmingham University, UK, before joining Ruth Bellairs’s laboratory at University College London and obtaining her PhD in early nephrogenesis of the chick embryo. Moving to Claudio Stern’s group in 1993 marked the beginning of Pamela’s continuing long period at Oxford University. During this time, in collaboration with many others, she has worked on morphogenesis of the urinary-genital and digestive systems in chicks and mice, whole-embryonic development in the chick, and 20th century history of biomedical science. Since 2008, collaborating with groups at the University of Santiago de Compostela, Pamela has extended her research to adult-developmental and physiological processes translational to humans, such as cardiac and adipose metabolic effects on energy balance and body mass. She continues to teach pre-clinical medical students at several Oxford colleges, to try to maintain a sense of comparison, not only between different vertebrates but also in terms of spatial and temporal scales.

Eva Candal
Eva Candal is Professor of Developmental Biology at the University of Santiago de Compostela where her teaching and research focus on evolutionary comparative aspects of development in anamniotic and amniotic vertebrates. In the last 15 years Eva has studied retina and brain morphogenesis in two species of elasmobranch fish (Scyliorhinus canicula and Haploblepharus fuscus, which are basal jawed vertebrates) and several species of bony fish, including Astyanax mexicanus, Oryzias latipes and Salmo trutta fario. Using comparative analyses, a strong emphasis has been placed on obtaining insights into the evolution of morphogenetic processes and resulting brain domains.
