Description

Artificial Intelligence in Healthcare, Second Edition shows where AI is delivering measurable value in medicine today, where it is failing, and what it takes to deploy it responsibly. Substantially rewritten since the first edition of 2020, it reflects the arrival of foundation models, multimodal data, autonomous and agentic systems, and the regulatory frameworks now shaping their use. Twelve chapters by leading practitioners cover AI-driven healthcare transformation and the gap between hype and real-world impact; next-generation drug discovery and molecular design; intelligent drug delivery and pharmaceutical innovation; oncology, from diagnostics to precision treatment pathways; medical imaging; medical devices; surgical intelligence; next-generation digital care; security, privacy and information sharing; insurance and personalised risk; and the ethical and legal questions that decide whether the machine can be trusted. Throughout, the emphasis is on evidence rather than promise: what problem each application solves, where it works in practice, where it fails, and what it means clinically and economically. Written for clinicians, healthcare leaders, industry and policymakers as well as researchers in computer science, data science, bioinformatics and biomedical engineering, it is a practical decision-making tool rather than a technical manual or an academic survey.

Key features

  • Maps real world performance against the hype across drug discovery, oncology, imaging, surgery, medical devices, digital care and insurance
  • Covers foundation models, agentic systems and ambient intelligence
  • Explains regulatory pathways (FDA, EMA, MHRA, EU AI Act) for AI in medical devices and clinical use, updated for 2025 to 2026
  • Addresses security, privacy, ethics, law and liability so AI can be deployed responsibly

Review quotes

Review of the previous edition:
"This book is overall a very complete and organized book that gives newly interested persons a look at AI and its applications. The first few chapters give readers a chance to get used to the vocabulary and give small but effective diagrams explaining often confused concepts such as machine learning versus deep learning. The first few chapters may be extremely dry if the readers are fairly familiar with AI. Therefore, I would recommend this book for readers who feel unsure of their foundation in AI. I would say of the books I have read on digital health in general, this book is more focused. If you compare to Data Pulse: A Brief Tour of Artificial Intelligence in Healthcare, Marcetich (New Degree Press, 2020) or Deep Medicine: How Artificial Intelligence Can Make Healthcare Human Again, Topal (Basic Books, 2019), both put a focus on challenges of AI, whereas this book has a large focus on the opportunities and covers them in great detail."—Doody Reviews
