The Inclusion-Based Boundary Element Method (iBEM) is an innovative numerical method for the study of the multi-physical and mechanical behaviour of composite materials, linear elasticity, potential flow or Stokes fluid dynamics. It combines the basic ideas of Eshelby’s Equivalent Inclusion Method (EIM) in classic micromechanics and the Boundary Element Method (BEM) in computational mechanics. The book starts by explaining the application and extension of the EIM from elastic problems to the Stokes fluid, and potential flow problems for a multiphase material system in the infinite domain. It also shows how switching the Green’s function for infinite domain solutions to semi-infinite domain solutions allows this method to solve semi-infinite domain problems. A thorough examination of particle-particle interaction and particle-boundary interaction exposes the limitation of the classic micromechanics based on Eshelby’s solution for one particle embedded in the infinite domain, and demonstrates the necessity to consider the particle interactions and boundary effects for a composite containing a fairly high volume fraction of the dispersed materials. Starting by covering the fundamentals required to understand the method and going on to describe everything needed to apply it to a variety of practical contexts, this book is the ideal guide to this innovative numerical method for students, researchers, and engineers.

Assessing Progress toward Sustainability: Frameworks, Tools, and Case Studies provides practical frameworks for measuring progress toward sustainability in various areas of production, consumption, services and urban development as they relate to environmental impact. A variety of policies/strategies or frameworks are available at national and international levels. This book presents an integrated approach to sustainability progress measurement by considering both the frameworks and methodological developments of various tools, as well as their implementation in assessing the sustainability of processes, products and services through a global perspective. Combining methods and their application, the book covers a variety of topics, including lifecycle assessment, risk assessment, nexus thinking, and connection to SDGs. Organized clearly into three main sections --Frameworks, Tools, and Case Studies--this book can serve as a practical resource for researchers and practitioners alike in environmental science, sustainability, environmental management and environmental engineering.

The HAZOP Leader’s Handbook is designed specifically to help HAZOP leaders plan and execute successful HAZOP studies, based on the author’s many years of experience of participating in, observing and facilitating HAZOP studies, as well as observing, training, mentoring and assessing HAZOP leaders. The book assumes that the reader understands the methodology and has experienced HAZOP meetings and does not seek to explain the methodology itself. Rather, it focuses on the application of the methodology and the responsibilities and skills of the HAZOP leader in the preparation, execution and reporting of the study. Although the principal subject is HAZOP, much of the content equally applies to other facilitated hazard identification techniques such as Hazard Identification (HAZID) or Failure Modes Effects and Criticality Analysis (FMECA). The prime purpose of this book is to provide guidance specific to HAZOP leaders to help them to maximise the effectiveness of their HAZOP studies, thereby getting the most benefit from the methodology, promoting consistency and rigour in its application and sustaining its well-earned reputation.

Advanced Differential Equations provides coverage of high-level topics in ordinary differential equations and dynamical systems. The book delivers difficult material in an accessible manner, utilizing easier, friendlier notations and multiple examples. Sections focus on standard topics such as existence and uniqueness for scalar and systems of differential equations, the dynamics of systems, including stability, with examples and an examination of the eigenvalues of an accompanying linear matrix, as well as coverage of existing literature. From the eigenvalues' approach, to coverage of the Lyapunov direct method, this book readily supports the study of stable and unstable manifolds and bifurcations. Additional sections cover the study of delay differential equations, extending from ordinary differential equations through the extension of Lyapunov functions to Lyapunov functionals. In this final section, the text explores fixed point theory, neutral differential equations, and neutral Volterra integro-differential equations.
