Aerobiology documents the proceedings of the Third International Symposium held at the University of Sussex, England, in September 1969. The book is organized into three chapters that correspond to the three sessions held during the symposium. These three sessions dealt with themes of airborne infections in closed and segregated environments; the value and use of germ-free environments; and physiological and genetic factors in host resistance. Examples of the contributions during these sessions included studies on the transmission of meningococci among Army recruits; the transfer and acquisition of micro-organisms between and by patients nursed in a uni-directionally ventilated environment and those in an open ward; and the association between blood group status and susceptibility to certain virus infections. The symposium also included seminars that focused on the following themes: intramural spread of infection; laboratory safety; the immunological aspects of pathogenesis; vaccines and vaccination methods; microbial survival in air; rapid diagnosis; techniques in aerobiology; and the ways in which airborne particles cause infection.

Immune Biology of Allogeneic Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation provides clinical and scientific researchers with a deep understanding of the current research in this field and the implications for translational practice. By providing an overview of the immune biology of HSCT, an explanation of immune rejection, and detail on antigens and their role in HSCT success, this book embraces biologists and clinicians who need a broad view of the deeply complex processes involved. It then moves on to discuss the immunobiology mechanisms that influence graft-versus-host disease (GVHD), graft-versus-leukemi... (GVL) effect, and transplantation success. Using illustrative figures, highlighting key issues, describing recent successes and discussing unanswered questions, this book sums up the current state of HSCT to enhance the prospects for the future. Allogeneic HSCT is a medical procedure in which a patient receives blood-forming stem cells from a genetically similar but not identical donor. This procedure is commonly performed for people with diseases of the blood, bone marrow, or certain cancers, but it remains risky with many possible complications. As such, experimental practice is reserved for preclinical animal models including the mouse and dog. These animal models have been essential in developing transplant protocols, including preclinical testing of conditioning regimens, treatment of GVHD, and understanding the pathology of GVHD as well as the immunological mechanisms of GVHD and GVL effect. However, recent research has revealed significant species differences between humans and animal models that must be considered when relating animal model studies to clinical allogeneic HSCT scenarios.

Immunological Properties of Protein Hormones covers the proceedings of the 1964 International Endocrinological Symposia on Immunological Properties of Protein Hormones, held in Rome, Italy. This symposium is organized under the auspices of Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei and of Consiglio Nazionale delle Rieerche Rome. This book is organized into four sections encompassing 27 chapters that tackle the immunological properties of gonadotropins, growth hormones, and insulin. The first section presents first an overview of immunological studies of protein hormones, followed by a discussion on the application of immunofluorescence to localization of pituitary hormones. This section also looks into the antigenic property of ACTH antibodies. The remaining sections cover the immunoassay methods of analysis, occurrence, distribution, clinical and physiological aspects, functions, and antigenic properties of the specific protein hormones. This book is of great benefit to immunoendocrinologis...

The Plasma Proteins: Structure, Function, and Genetic Control, Second Edition, Volume I is a systematic account of the structure, function, and genetic control of plasma proteins. Clinical relevance is introduced in terms of principles, with emphasis on human proteins. Animal proteins are also used as examples in some cases. Comprised of nine chapters, this volume begins with a historical background on plasma proteins, along with their nomenclature, characterization, and genetic markers. The primary structure and three-dimensional conformation of plasma proteins are also considered. The discussion then turns to the chemical, physical, and biological properties of various plasma proteins such as serum albumin, lipoproteins, and immunoglobulins. Subsequent chapters deal with protease inhibitors in plasma; purification, physical properties, chemical composition, and molecular structure of transferrin; biosynthesis and metabolism of serum lipoproteins; and physical, chemical, and functional properties of the proteins of the complement system. The final chapter is devoted to ?2-microglobulin, with particular reference to its purification and physical properties; chemical composition and structure; physiological function, biosynthesis, and catabolism; and presence and function in cell membranes. This monograph will be of interest to molecular biologists and biochemists.

Over the past five years the major importance of cytokines in the regulation of the immune system has become established. This book is the first to review the role of these factors in the control of growth of differentiation of B lymphocytes and thus represents an up-to-date and timely overview of the B-cell response. For the immunologist, there are detailed accounts of the physio-chemical properties of the relevant cytokines and their effect on B lymphocytes from the level of receptor signalling, through ontogeny, activation and proliferation to the expression of specific immunoglobulin isotypes. For the clinician, the involvement of cytokines in disease and normal immune response is discussed.
