Progress in Energy and Combustion Science (PECS) publishes review articles that provide a comprehensive in-depth overview, evaluation, and discussion that advances our understanding of a particular topic. PECS seeks papers that are the forefront of advancing understanding of the complex and multi-physics based mechanisms that govern energy engineering and technology that are deeply rooted in science. Papers should provide insights into and technical assessment of how to simultaneously increase sustainability, viability and reliability. Building on its historical roots in combustion science, PECS focusses on energy science and engineering reviews of the complex coupled, non-linear and multi-scale phenomena that govern energy conversion and storage technologies.

Progress in Energy and Combustion Science publishes articles written by internationally recognized authors in the subject of their review in fields that include combustion, flames, fuel science and technology, reacting flows, thermo-chemistry, electro-chemistry, thermal-fluid energy systems, advanced energy cycles, electrification of traditionally thermal driven processes, e-fuels and other related sustainable energy solutions. PECS does not publish original work and does not aim to compete with other journals focussed on electronics, electrical systems, material science, medical applications, engineering structures, policy, geological science or market design.

Each volume contains a number of specially commissioned articles that provide the reader with an orderly and concise state-of-the-art scholarly review, together with a science-based discussion of a particular aspect of the field. While they should not be unnecessarily long, the length of the articles should typically be less than 80 pages. PECS seeks articles that provide deep assessment and insights that are useful for researchers, students, industry engineers and government alike. Review articles are not surveys or tutorials, they are technical assessment of the state of the art supported by analytical and quantitative arguments and the authors own assessment.

Reviews are by invitation of the editors only. If you have a proposal for a review article, please do not submit your article directly, instead download and complete the following form (Proposal Form), which should be submitted through the journal’s Editorial Manager website. If your proposal is accepted, the Editors will invite you to submit your Review.

Occasionally, PECS solicits short Perspectives to highlight recent successes, current developments, and future research needs in energy and combustion science. Perspectives are by invitation of the editors only with the aim of broadening the impact of energy and combustion research from an application point of view.
