Patterns aims to cover data science in the broadest sense, publishing computational and data-heavy research from all fields, as well as related topics in ethics, philosophy, and science policy.The journal is highly selective and seeks to publish works that offer major advances and that the editors feel will be of broad interest to our interdisciplinary readership.

Patterns a sister journal to Cell and is hosted on cell.com along with more than 50 other impactful titles spanning all fields of science.

Topics covered by the journal include, but are not limited to, machine learning, artificial intelligence (AI), statistics, data processing, data management, data visualization, and health informatics as well as innovative computational or data-heavy research from any field of science. Papers from the fields of ethics and philosophy are welcome when they touch on topics of relevance to data scientists, such as AI governance or artificial consciousness.

Patterns is open access and dedicated to promoting open, reproducible science. Papers are selected, in part, based on the openness and FAIRness of underlying data, code, and models. For tips on submitting papers that meet our high standards please explore our editorials.

Patterns publishes a range of article types, including full-length research articles, in-depth reviews, and short opinions. The journal aims to be a platform for diverse voices and welcomes submissions from data managers, research software engineers, students, and artists in addition to academic researchers.

Papers are rigorously peer reviewed according to the high standards of Cell Press. Peer review is overseen by our in-house editors and guided by the members of our advisory board.
