In this text some fundamental issues concerning the strategic impact of vertical structures of firms are discussed in a successive oligopoly model. Vertical integration strategy has been identified as one of the key strategies which determine the success or failure of enterprises. Many studies on vertical integration are based on business experiences and interviews with managers. However, the extensive application of game theory in business economics allows this study on vertical integration to be based on sound theoretic ground. Moreover, the significance of public enterprises in some Western European economies and the trends of economic transition in Eastern Europe justify the efforts to analyse vertical integration issues in the mixed market, which is created by the participation of a public firm into an industry otherwise characterised as a successive oligopoly.

The first part of this book contains the material for a course in standard microeconomics and general equilibrium. These chapters contain the necessary background on commodities, consumers, producers, as well as the classical results about the existence of general (Walras) equilibria and the fundamentals of welfare theory. The second part of the book may be seen as a continuation dealing with more advanced topics. This textbook shows how the general equilibrium theory can be put into use to provide new insights into various fields of economic science. The reader does not need previous particular mathematical training; the formal approach is introduced in a piecemeal fashion, so that no difficult mathematics occurs in the beginning.

The Symposium aimed at analysing and solving the various problems of representation and analysis of decision making in economic systems starting from the level of the individual firm and ending up with the complexities of international policy coordination. The papers are grouped into subject areas such as game theory, control methods, international policy coordination and the applications of artificial intelligence and experts systems as a framework in economic modelling and control. The Symposium therefore provides a wide range of important information for those involved or interested in the planning of company and national economics.

Law and Economics

This second edition takes into account the major developments in economics and jurisprudence that have occurred since the publication of the first edition. A new chapter has been added on anti-discrimination law and such topics as adverse possession, rent control, medical malpractice, product reliability, and defense against criminal prosecution have been reexamined in the light of new theoretical developments and case studies. Environmental law and a careful comparison of alternative methods to control the environment are included.

International Economic Policies and Their Theoretical Foundations

  • John M. Letiche

  • eBook
    9 7 8 - 1 - 4 8 3 2 - 9 7 0 4 - 0
The literature on international economics has become excessively specialized. In selecting distinguished readings for this source book--including contributions by Nobel laureates such as Lawrence R. Klein, Arthur Lewis, James Meade, and Theodore W. Schultz--Professor Letiche breaks the mold. The essays concentrate on interrelation between theory and actual policy design, and this collection of classic pieces and recent economic contributions are a valued resource in universities and government offices.

Asymptotic Theory for Econometricians

This book is intended to provide a somewhat more comprehensive and unified treatment of large sample theory than has been available previously and to relate the fundamental tools of asymptotic theory directly to many of the estimators of interest to econometricians. In addition, because economic data are generated in a variety of different contexts (time series, cross sections, time series--cross sections), we pay particular attention to the similarities and differences in the techniques appropriate to each of these contexts.

Contained in this volume are the edited and refereed papers which were presented at a conference held at Nuffield College, Oxford in May 1987. The papers, which represent the recent research of a group of eminent economists, reflect the variety and scope of modern economic analysis. New results are presented in econometric estimation, the theory of aggregation, poverty measurement and the general theory of measurement in economics. The volume is distinguished by the inclusion of the discussion which occurred as each paper was presented, so capturing the interaction and exchange of ideas that characterised the conference.

Introduction to Economics, Sixth Edition gives a general and nonmathematical introductory approach to the field of economics. The monograph also updates the reader with economic issues over the years and modern economic analysis. The book is divided into seven parts. Part I includes basic topics such as the aim and purpose of economics; production, consumption, and trade; and the factors of production. Part II discusses industrial organization; growth, transformation, and development; localization of industry; and large-scale production. Part III tackles the dynamics of supply and demand, while Part IV talks about the distribution of income, wages, interest, and profit. Part V deals with the national income; expenditure, production, and income in a closed economy; and inflation. Part VI discusses international trade and finance, and Part VII covers the establishment of economic policies and its inherent problems. The text is recommended for economics students who need a good foundation of different principles and concepts in economics as well as their real-world applications.

Handbook of Computational Economics summarizes recent advances in economic thought, revealing some of the potential offered by modern computational methods. With computational power increasing in hardware and algorithms, many economists are closing the gap between economic practice and the frontiers of computational mathematics. In their efforts to accelerate the incorporation of computational power into mainstream research, contributors to this volume update the improvements in algorithms that have sharpened econometric tools, solution methods for dynamic optimization and equilibrium models, and applications to public finance, macroeconomics, and auctions. They also cover the switch to massive parallelism in the creation of more powerful computers, with advances in the development of high-power and high-throughput computing. Much more can be done to expand the value of computational modeling in economics. In conjunction with volume one (1996) and volume two (2006), this volume offers a remarkable picture of the recent development of economics as a science as well as an exciting preview of its future potential.

Handbook of the Economics of Art and Culture

  • Victor A. Ginsburgh + 1 more

This volume emphasizes the economic aspects of art and culture, a relatively new field that poses inherent problems for economics, with its quantitative concepts and tools. Building bridges across disciplines such as management, art history, art philosophy, sociology, and law, editors Victor Ginsburgh and David Throsby assemble chapters that yield new perspectives on the supply and demand for artistic services, the contribution of the arts sector to the economy, and the roles that public policies play. With its focus on culture rather than the arts, Ginsburgh and Throsby bring new clarity and definition to this rapidly growing area.
