In Volume 1 the application of the social skills training (SST) model is traced across the lifespan from children, through adolescents and young and middle-aged adults, to the elderly. The various specialist uses of SST with the issues and problems prevalent at each stage are reviewed in depth. The use of SST with specific sub-groups, eg, delinquent adolescents and adults with behavioural disorders, is also considered as well as its use in professional training programmes. Volume 2 discusses the application of the social skills training model to specific clinical conditions. Its uses with schizophrenia, social anxiety, depression, the mentally handicapped, and substance abuse are reviewed in depth and practical recommendations for the future are given. Advances in social psychology and linguistics have implications for the future development of SST and their contributions to the field are presented in the final section.
