Jonathan Tran
Dr Tran received his Ph.D. in Theoretical & Applied Mechanics from University of Illinois, Urbana Champaign, USA and then worked as a postdoctoral researcher at Northwestern University, USA. From 2012-2018, Dr Tran were a research fellow and then a lecturer in Structural Engineering, department of Infrastructure Engineering, University of Melbourne. He has published three book chapters and over 70 refereed journal articles on various topics including Additive Manufacturing for Smart & Multifunctional Composites, Topology Optimisation for AM, Dynamic behaviours of Material. Dr Tran and his Ph.D. students were awarded several best paper awards for their research on computational mechanics and shock & impact analysis on of smart composite structures. Dr Tran has involved and contributed significantly to projects in the US and Australia supported by Office of Naval Research-US, Australian Research Council, Defence Material Technology Centre, as well as research agency CSIRO and industry partners such as Thales, Lockheed Martin. In those projects, he has proposed and developed various smart structures, realised by additive manufacturing, to solve the practical engineering applications.
Dr Tran’s core research interests lie at the interface between solid mechanics and materials engineering with the aim to develop novel materials that exhibit paradigm-shifting properties for extreme loading protection that can impact the general field of infrastructure and lightweight structural materials. He has also focused the fundamental understanding of why Nature develop sophisticated and effective ways to form remarkable composite materials & structure and their translation to engineering materials using Additive Manufacturing. He has contributed to the area of biomimetic & smart composite materials by investigating the material-structure-function relationships of naturally high-performance materials at different length-scales. His research group also employed state-of-the-art computational techniques and experiments to investigate bioinspired hierarchical structures..
