Fifty years on from the Chicago pile achieving critical mass, the nuclear energy community stands at a turning point. The future could be one of expansion with new generation reactors contributing to global energy needs, or contraction, with governments unwilling to invest in an energy source regarded by many as environmentally unsound.
The objective of this symposium was to bring together scientists working in industry and academia engaged in environmental problems with those working in nuclear energy, to provide a forum for the cross-fertilization among participants in pursuit of common solutions to the problem. Discussion focussed on the analysis of environment impact and construction of nuclear energy systems that provide a solution.
