Digital Twins Simulation of Electrical Power Systems is a methodological primer for the optimization of power systems using real-time dynamic modelling and simulation built using the HiL methodology, enabling the user to develop highly accurate digital twins of electrical systems. The work opens by introducing the main model-based, data-driven, and real-time implementation techniques for digital twins for electrical systems, before reviewing the fundamentals, implementation advantages and disadvantages, and core applications of the hardware in the loop methodology. Core HiL methods are presented, compared and analyzed alongside discussion of interfacing algorithms, co-simulation, and applications in power hardware in the loop (pHiL) scenarios. The work reviews communication protocols for modern electrical systems and addresses how they can be integrated into real-time and network simulations. Control algorithms are introduced and discussed with representative application examples. An extensive introduction to the Typhoon HiL Simulation environment is provided. The final third of the work provides an expansive application to multiple use scenarios in power electronics, power systems, innovative electrical systems, and automatic testing.
